Can Nutritional Supplements Help?
There can be no reasonable doubt that nutrition plays a vital role in the maintenance of a positive state of health and the prevention and treatment of disease. When proper diet and nutrients are supplied to the tissues of the body, they exert powerful influences on body metabolism.
Your doctor may suggest certain herbal products or specific nutritional products for you. These products are not without the potential for harmful side effects, especially if used improperly. All products you ingest, whether recommended or purchased by you independently should be discussed with your doctor. He or she may recommend a particular supplement product to help fulfill your individual need and complement your overall health care program. Patient's with special needs, such as women who require additional amounts of calcium and vitamin D (to prevent a negative calcium balance which results in a loss of bone strength) are a good example.
To quote the Select Committee on Nutritional and Human Needs, "In the view of many doctors and nutritionists consulted by the Select Committee, changes in diet amount to a wave of malnutrition of both over-and under-consumption that may be as profoundly damaging as the widespread contagious diseases of the early part of the century."
Vitamins, minerals, herbs, and similar products are considered essential by some leading authorities. Many consider vitamins and minerals, when taken properly, to be vital ingredients to maintain a healthy body. Nutritional supplements help the body increase resistance to fight infection, promote healing, improve joint motion, support nerve function and improve many other vital body processes. It is important that you obtain current information concerning herbs, vitamins and minerals and be aware of the value and risks associated with supplements when you add them to your diet. Your doctor of chiropractic has had considerable training in nutrition and can help you avoid any toxic effects or adverse interaction of improper consumption of nutritional substances. If you have any questions about your nutritional needs, consult your chiropractor for more specific information and advice.
Proper nutrition and the intake of vitamins should be reviewed with your doctor. There are also many internet sites which can provide additional information. We offer several websites which may provide helpful information.
